Yoga and Me
My yoga practice started out, like for many people, as a sort of “zen workout” class. I remember going to donation-based classes in East Village during college, standing in a Half-Moon pose, clenching my breath and thinking, “Seriously?! How much longer am I supposed to stand like this!”
Towards the end of my college career, I began to experience anxiety and depression. My mental health issues manifested themselves as chronic digestive issues and amenorrhea. I went to countless doctors and nutritionists, hoping for a quick fix for the mental and physical issues affecting my day-to-day life. It felt like I had tried everything, but no matter what nothing worked.
In my rotation of diets and workout regimes, I finally circled back to yoga. Sitting still to practice meditation and holding postures for minutes honestly sounded like torture, but I was desperate for any “cure” at this point. I went all in. Five years later, I’ve never looked back.
Discovering how powerful the combination of physical, intellectual, and spiritual mindfulness can be shifted my glass half-empty outlook, to one with more gratitude, compassion, and peace. Being kinder to myself, looking for the truth in every situation, and opting out of my “suffering” mindset granted me a deeper sense of gratitude than I had ever experienced in my life. The glass that was once half-empty now felt like it was overflowing.
I’m proud to be a Yoga Alliance certified 200-Hour RYT, ACE Certified Group Fitness Instructor, CorePower Sculpt & C2 certified, and Kids Yoga certified. I am so grateful to be able to share the power of yoga and meditation with my students. Let’s flow together!
A little more about me…
Yoga is one of my two main passions, the other driving force is acting. I graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts with Honors, receiving my BFA in Drama (with concentrations in Musical Theatre and Film/TV Acting) and Minor in Producing. I was first introduced to yoga during drama school; I even taught a sun salutation in one of my voice classes! I believe my yoga practice and acting are intertwined: my yoga supports my acting, and vice versa.
I mostly do professional voice acting, maybe you’ve heard my voice on TV before! I’ve done commercials for big brands, projects for Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, and video games with 2k Games, and more. Check out my acting website tessasouthwell.com if you’re interested in learning more about me.
